Rally Report 2010:
(Pics at the bottom!)
THURSDAY 29 APRIL
Large amount of cars arriving today - all helpers meet at Elizabeth Terminal Café for full English breakfast. Fantastic atmosphere as usual in the underground car park. Most cars, after collecting their rally packs were happy to find their own way to accommodation to commence the big car polish!
FRIDAY 30 APRIL AM
Met ferry again - another big group. This time we assembled in front of the ferry terminal due to the "boat show swelling" of the usual car park. It was just like old times being there all lined up. Steve Bailey, Manager of Condor Ferries and Simon Edsell, Managing Director were also there to greet them.
FRIDAY 30 APRIL EVENING
The best ever Vin d'Honneur is how it has been described. Absolutely fantastic! Connétable Crowcroft very generously hosted this for us at the Town Hall and presented the anniversary awards to the winners. Everyone felt so honoured and it is of course how most of the motor rallies in France start (by the local Mayor). The anniversary awards were made and also the Tourism Long Distance Award (see prize winners). The stars of the evening were Malcolm & Eileen Howse from the Epping club who have made 25 consecutive visits, winning the Silver Jubilee Award. Steve Bailey of Condor Ferries then took to the stage and announced that Malcolm & Eileen would be the guests of Condor Ferries next year when they would cover the cost to get them here for the 2011 rally. They will also be shown up onto the bridge along with anyone celebrating 10 years in 2011.
SATURDAY 01 MAY - CONCOURS
Up early and down to Peoples Park where Owen & team were already setting up the field. Next came the marquee and all other stalls. We were quite lucky with the weather, although it would have been better if it had been a little warmer - at least it was dry and mainly sunny. There were a fabulous display of vehicles. As well as MG's we also had 40 classic Fords displayed along with several classic Minis. There was a 1921 Model T Ford,1930 MG 18/18 Mk 2 & a Lincoln Zephyr and many others. Mg's who wished to enter were judged in concours by a panel of judges. The top prize (Prix d'Honneur) went to Dave & Ann Stowe from the Arden Club in their 1949 MGYT. Best Jersey Car/Best MGBGT Rubber Bumper went to Phil Hey in his 1976 Aconite BGT. Some stayed on around the park and socialised, some left their cars there and went shopping and some went to the annual boat show which happily now coincides with our rally each year.
SATURDAY 01 MAY - FANCY DRESS PARTY
This of course was up to it’s usual standard, even though we had made it a really difficult theme (TV ADVERTS). Who would have thought that you could come up with so many different costumes, but as usual you did. Roche wisely suggested that the band should choose the winning outfit, and they chose Paul Carlton(AKA Green Giant) from the St Albans Club. He was covered in green paint and leaves - really good too. We also had a group of Virgins from Epping and a bomber with a mask & bouncing bomb from Arden. We had toothpaste, Sheila's Wheels, 118's Cadbury Smash spacemen, pandas, The Stig and a couple of women recommending Fiesta Kitchen rolls , although I must say that they looked more like pantomime dames. One of them was well over 6ft tall, had a deep voice and told bad jokes - erm ...... wonder who that was? All fantastic party making and incredible enthusiasm!
SUNDAY 02 MAY
Out to Le Braye at the crack of dawn - well, some of them were! Many thanks to Steve Hewlett and the Classic & Vintage Racing Club of Jersey for their input and expertise. Steve was the clerk of the course with Jenny & Bill doing the time keeping. Fantastic atmosphere again & the café there must have done really well on bacon butties. Driving skills were absolutely superb! So much competition and you can’t beat the smell of burning rubber!! Denis was the commentator who kept us we informed on all cars entering. The Best Driver Trophy went to Ken Waylett in his 1972 Midget. Second overall & Best Jersey Driver went to Angela Davies in her 2002 MGTF - nice one for the ladies Angela hee! Hee!
SUNDAY 02 MAY - PRIZEGIVING
By very popular demand we were back to St Mary's Community Centre and the fabulous cream teas prepared for us by Jan Le Brun and her team. First we were given an official welcome by the Connétable of St Mary, Juliette Gallichan, saying how pleased she was to see us in her parish again. Then as we were nearing the end of the tea, the moment that everyone had been waiting for - the prize giving. We started off with the winning fancy dress trophy and worked our way through to the Prix D'Honneur. The points were very close and some long discussions and reviews were held by the judges on Saturday before they came to their final decisions. A very hard task with so many immaculate cars. Dave & Ann Stowe from the Arden Club won the Prix D'Honneur with their stunning 1949 MGYT. Premier Concours was won by Vicki Edge also from the Arden Club, with her immaculate 1964 Iris Blue MGB. Geoff, her husband was so overcome with emotion that he couldn't take a photo of Roche presenting it to her. (sorry Geoff, street cred down the pan!). Premier Condition was won by Steven (PJ's) Mitchell in his fabulous 1962 Red MGB. PJ's? you ask! You should have been there! Mark Tossell of Taw & Torridge won the Midget Chrome Bumper Trophy with his car which was featured in EMG - fabulous (even if he did beat me!) The roof raised at the winner of the Best Jersey Car, because it was Phil Hey in his Aconite BGT Rubber Bumper. Phil is the manager of the West View Hotel where the Northants & Epping Clubs were staying. His car also won Best BGT Rubber Bumper which was presented to him by the sponsor Aaron Davies MD of Infinite Support. A full list of winners follows and I apologise that you did not all get mentioned individually. Don't think I would be allowed to have a feature that long! You are all fantastic anyway, whatever condition your car!
MONDAY 03 MAY- THE RANDALL RUN
This was fashioned around the Randall Pubs as they provided some sponsorship & discount to the participants on their pub meals as well as sponsoring a trophy.. It was not a competition this year, just a relaxing drive. We started off on the north coast with the help of the blues & twos of our honorary police to make sure the road was clear for us. Basically, it was a coastal run from the north to the southwest, finishing up at the Old Portelet Inn for a pub lunch. We then continued around the coast a bit further to Noirmont Point, home of the old German gun emplacements & bunkers. We were shown around three of the bunkers, one of which had only just been opened for the first time since 1948. The Jersey Occupation Society were there to give us a guided tour.
fantastic weekend. A huge thank you to everyone for coming over to our island to take part in the Jersey MG Rally.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED FOR YOUR HARD WORK IN MAKING THIS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT FOR OUR CLUB
