THE 29 JERSEY SPRING RALLY
After the months of planning and hectic couple of weeks on the final stages of putting programme together etc. it happened. Cars started arriving very early this year, first one was Paul & Amanda Fisher from Filey in their 1978 Midget on Monday 25 April and it was a steady flow leading to the largest amount arriving together on Thursday 28 April - 40 cars. We gathered them in front of the terminal building to present them with rally packs then take them to their hotels. 80 cars travelled to Jersey for the rally and were joined by just over 20 locals. we had all the regulars here including blasts from the past like Foggy who brought his lovely wife Alexis to meet us, Penny & Phil Bicknell & Tony & Marilyn Whinfield who we had not seen for 11 years. We also had three generations of the Arnold family. Emily; her parents Richard & Jacqui & Grandparents John & Val. We also had a lot of new visitors this time and we hope you all enjoyed it enough to come back. The weather had been terrific so all fingers were crossed for it to continue.
Friday 29 April
Met more cars after grabbing a few little glances of the Royal Wedding. The day went so quickly and it was time to officially receive our visitors. The drinks reception was at the St Helier Town Hall hosted by Connétable Simon Crowcroft (Jersey's equivalent to the Mayor) who welcomed everyone then made presentations on behalf of Jersey Tourism. There was the long Distance Award which was won by Paul & Amanda Fisher who had driven 342 miles in their Midget to board the ferry in Weymouth. There were also the Anniversary Awards for repeated consecutive visits. John Hunt; Veronica & Daniel Hubbard; Michael Port & Martin & Sharon Oliver all received 5 year awards. Vicki & Geoff Edge; Roger Pratten & Ken & Clara Waylett all received 10 year awards. The wine flowed and old friends met up with one another as well meeting up with new people. Home then to prepare for a very early start the next day - concours!
Saturday 30 April - daytime
Up at the crack of dawn and down to the park to prepare for the day. Owen & Adam already there marking out the field to accommodate over 150 cars. Our prayers had been answered and the weather was going to be glorious. We has a fabulous display of cars - mostly MG's of course. We also had a Morgan Aero 8 brought over from Surrey by Paul & Claire Knight. This was accompanied by an original Morgan Aero 3 wheeler owned by Roger Billot of the Jersey Old Motor Club. We also had a 1925 MG Sports on display as well as a beautiful C Type Midget owned by Tom & Wendy Johnson of Hertfordshire. Another lovely "oldie" was a 1932 F Magna from Oxford and owned by Alastare Bentley. We had lots of MGF's this year and MGZ's. Wealso had a good mix of A's B's & Midgets - fabulous show! The judges had a very difficult job choosing winners from the wonderful standard of cars this year. One of the hotels we use had 50 of these beautiful cars in their car park - camaraderie was great!
Saturday 30 April - evening
In they all poured by the coach loads - most of them in fancy dress. This year's theme was bad taste. I must say, that some of them were quite tame but there were some very clever ideas. The winners were Ian Keeling & Jo Tibbs from the Northants Club who came as a lecherous lecturer with his pregnant pupil (complete with a scan photo). Sooooo funny! Congratulations to all of you with your fancy dress ideas - including one who had a familiar (slightly enhanced) character on a t shirt . There was also an arch bishop & a tart; Andy Pandy & Looby Lou who were smoking & drunk and a few Triumph Owners. Bin Laden was also there! We had a live band who played lots of 50's / 60's music and a raffle with £250 cash first prize. Great day altogether & more to do tomorrow.
Sunday 01 May
Up early again and out to the west coast for the driving skills & burning rubber. Everyone queuing to enter on a first come first served basis. Great atmosphere there & the weather was not too bad. Plenty of coffee & bacon butties were available. The driving skills are always very popular and great for spectators. Lots of cheering from the banks & good commentary from Denis Jean. Angela Davies stole the show winning all the silverware - yes! beating all the men with her brilliant driving in her MGF. Well done Angela and commiserations to the people she beat including Aaron her husband!!
Driving skills over it was on to another venue for the prize giving and a delicious cream tea prepared by the ladies of the parish of St Mary. This was held in the St Mary Community Centre where we filled their car park with our beautiful cars. Miss St Mary, Georgina Durrell was invited and Connétable Juliette Gallichan welcomed everyone to her parish before the event commenced. Roche Bentley was also present after flying in that morning. Before we started, Roche said a few words about Ken Harrison who had passed away on the previous Thursday. Ken was a previous Area Secretary of our club and a Jersey Rally concours judge. We had a few moments to remember Ken. Tea was then served with an abundance of cakes, scones & tea, then what we had all been waiting for, to see who had won what. It seems to have been ladies year this year - they won lots of major trophies. Vicki Edge of Lincoln won the Prix d'Honneur with her fabulous 1964 MGB roadster & Angela Davies of Jersey won Best Driver Trophy. Northants had a good scoop this year including family Arnold winning best MGZ & best Saloon. All results are at the end of this report. Well done all of you. No prize giving would be complete without Roche's dog game - highlight of the afternoon. This was won by Alexis Brooke - you will have to bring her back now Foggy so you can win one too.
Monday 02 May
Bit of a sleep in today, as we had a late start of 10.30. 100 cars congregated in the Jersey Evening Post car park for photographs and interviews by the local media. See those photos on the Jersey Evening Post Website. Next was the drive through the grounds of Government House where we were welcomed by His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway & Mrs Ridgway. This can be seen on You Tube under MG Drive By. Jersey 2011. Guess who was at the back in the Saab? See if you can spot who it was. Having driven through we then headed for the south west coast - Portelet. A Buffet was provided at the Old Portelet Inn - there were so many of us it had to be in two sittings. Very good food and the car park was sectioned off to accommodate MG's only. Lunch eaten, we then drove a few metres around the headland where there were German Bunkers open to view. Fantastic rally this year and sincere thank you's to all of you for taking part. We are very flattered that you enjoy the event so much
